2008 has seen a great deal of change for the Incident Command Training team. We have relocated to a purpose built command simulator at our central training establishment at Southwark and expanded our team to include 20 watch manager trainers to enable us to provide command training at all levels.

Our new command simulator has been built within the historic West block at Southwark and provides us with the following facilities:

Hydra minerva control room
  • Briefing room/Classroom/Plenary area with seating for 30
  • 4 syndicate pods, 2 of which can be used as classrooms or command unit simulators
  • Observation room
  • Control room and technicians software development area
  • Holding area with large screen for news injects/refreshment area

The facility is equipped with wide, local and wireless networking, a bespoke CCTV/recording system and networked servers and laptops enabling us to utilise a range of command training tools, including Minerva/Hydra.

The expansion of our team now gives us the capability to deliver Incident Command training to all levels from Crew Manager to Brigade Manager. Our training delivery plan now includes:

  • Crew/Watch Manager Incident Management development module (a four week course culminating with risk assessment at the Fire Service College)
  • Enhanced operational training for competent Crew/Watch Managers at Fire Service College
  • Incident Command training for developing Middle Managers
  • Enhanced operational training for competent Middle Managers including Incident Command observation and feedback in command simulator
  • Incident Command exercises for Supervisory and Middle managers at command simulator
  • Incident Command exercises for Strategic Managers
  • Command Support Officer training
  • Station based mobile Incident Command training
  • Middle and Strategic manager assessment centre measuring to national standards and PQA’s
